Walgreens Revolutionizes Access to Medicare Advantage Benefits Online

By: Christopher Wiesler

In a groundbreaking move, Walgreens has become the first community pharmacy to extend its acceptance of a wide range of Medicare Advantage supplemental benefits to its online platforms. Through its website and the Walgreens app, eligible members can now conveniently shop from a catalog of approximately 1,700 Shop Eligible Products on Walgreens digital channels.

This expansion of services marks a significant advancement in healthcare accessibility, enabling consumers to utilize their Medicare Advantage supplemental benefits not only in-store but also through online channels. Since 2019, consumers have been able to shop using these benefits in physical stores, but this new initiative broadens access to include online markets, catering to consumers regardless of payment method.

The enhanced offering doesn't stop at product purchases. It also includes additional digital health and wellbeing services designed to further support the diverse needs of consumers. These offerings encompass 30-minute pickup and one-hour delivery of retail products, same-day prescription delivery, Walgreens Rx Savings Finder, Walgreens Virtual Healthcare, and Seniors Day, held every first Tuesday of the month.

Under the new offering, members can easily browse eligible products tailored to their plan on Walgreens.com and the Walgreens app. Through a dedicated Over-the-Counter (OTC) landing page, members can view a list of eligible items associated with their plan, as well as common eligible OTC items across multiple plans. Purchasing OTC-eligible items is streamlined, with members able to input their Medicare Advantage card numbers as the first form of payment, utilizing available card funds for eligible purchases.

Furthermore, members can take advantage of Walgreens Seniors Day, a special promotion where patients aged 55 and older and their caregivers can enjoy a 20% discount on eligible regular-priced merchandise on the first Tuesday of every month.

In terms of delivery options, members can choose between one-hour and 24-hour same-day delivery options, providing flexibility and convenience.

This move by Walgreens reflects a commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions in the healthcare sector. By leveraging technology and expanding accessibility to Medicare Advantage benefits, Walgreens aims to enhance the overall shopping experience for its diverse customer base.
